Abstract

Capture and storage of industrial carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is identified as one promising technology for CO 2 -emissions mitigation to reduce the worsening global warming. This paper estimates the storage capacity for CO 2 of different geological storage options including sedimentary rocks, unmineable deep coal beds, oil fields and depleted natural gas reservoirs in China. The storage capacity for CO 2 are 12.078 Gt, 143.51 Gt, 10.17 Gt and 30.48 Gt in coal beds, deep saline aquifers, oil fields by CO 2 -EOR and depleted gas fields, respectively. The geological storage capacity onshore are about 122.20 Gt accounting for 62.27% of total geological storage capacity, the left 37.73% of total capacity are located on continental shelf.
