Abstract

A theory of primary dendrite spacing γ 1 in directional solidification of alloys is developed based on thermodynamic and geometric arguments. The results for a cubic material is γ 1 = ( πΔTR/ G) 0.5), where ΔT is the unit undercooling, R is the tip radius and G is the temperature gradient. This prediction is in quantitative agreement with experimental data.
