Abstract

To the Editor: Mucormycosis is an uncommon saprophytic infection classically affecting immunocompromised individuals. Particularly susceptible are those with uncontrolled diabetes, organ transplantation, or hematologic malignancy.1 The disease is characterized by angioinvasion with soft tissue destruction and may be rapidly progressive and fatal, with overall mortality exceeding 65%.1 Mucormycosis manifests in one of five clinical forms: rhinocerebral, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, or disseminated disease.
