Abstract

PRIMARY carcinoma of the trachea is a rarity. The tumour is not even mentioned in some textbooks of pathology (Anderson, 1953; Ewing, 1942; Liebow, 1952 ) and receives only passing reference in others (Rewelt, 1963; Willis, 196o ). This is a reflection of the fact that the trachea is a kind of no-man's land, lying below the main field of interest of the laryngologist, and above that of the thoracic surgeon and physician. So far about 200 cases of primary carcinoma of the trachea have been recorded. This paper reviews the clinical features, including the advances made in the surgical treatment of the condition during recent years, and discusses the histological classification of tracheal carcinomas.
