Abstract

Primary alveolar hypoventilation is a syndrome of unknown cause characterized by failure of automatic respiration despite normal lungs and chest bellows. The clinical characteristics of the syndrome are detailed. The relationship between primary alveolar hypoventilation and the sleep apnea syndromes is discussed. Primary alveolar hypoventilation is distinguished from central alveolar hypoventilation due to neurological disease, and the latter entity is reviewed. Electrophrenic stimulation is a promising therapeutic modality for treatment of primary alveolar hypoventilation.
