Abstract

SUMMARY The term “primary alveolar cleft bone grafting” has described no uniform procedure or technique. Because of this, broad generalizations regarding primary cleft grafting should be avoided. Any report should be judged according to the particular technique used. It is our feeling, which is supported by preliminary data, that primary alveolar cleft bone grafting using limited dissection techniques can be performed without adversely affecting maxillary and midface growth. We emphasize that these data are preliminary, and the evaluation of these patients will continue throughout their growth and development years.
