Abstract

The article by Thompson et al. on congenital malaria (Pediatrics 60:209, August 1977) needs to be clarified. If the patient was given only chloroquine phosphate, as stated in the article, a clinical and not a radical cure was effected. This patient will sooner or later have a resurgence of symptoms unless he was also treated with primaquine phosphate. The hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were undoubtedly due to exo-erythrocytic Plasmodium vivax parasites, conditions that are well known in tropical areas where malaria is endemic.
