Abstract
This paper examines the dynamic response of an extractive industry to the imposition of a temporary price ceiling which is anticipated in advance. After drawing attention to a related literature on backstop technology, the intertemporal competitive equilibrium is found using simple arbitrage arguments. Then a closed form solution to the monopolist's control problem is derived under the assumption of a constant elasticity of demand. These two types of industrial organization are compared in a concluding section.
