Abstract
A most common method of automated inspection of steel tubes uses multi-element immersion probes, which are capable of scanning a large surface area, while the tube is moved along a water filled test chamber in a helical motion. However, the sound field of a conventional multi-element probe lacks uniformity: In the scan region between adjacent elements, a steep sensitivity drop occurs with the risk of flaws remaining undetected. A new type of multi-element probes with overlapping beam profiles and entirely uniform sensitivity along its scan axis is presented in this paper. Overlapping of adjacent elements is achieved by means of a miniature electronic circuit, which is integrated in the probe housing. As a result of the uniform sound field, the pitch of the scan helix and, consequently, the through-put can be considerably increased. Already installed conventional multi-element probes can simply be replaced by the new ones, since no additional modification of the existing ultrasonic equipment is necessary.
