Abstract

Genetic counseling is today's preventive medicine. To be maximally effective it must be routinely available over widespread areas and coupled with training programs for health professionals and educational programs for the general public. We here describe the first Regional Genetic Counseling Program expressly designed to implement these principles. This innovative Program was designed to serve the 201,000 square miles of Colorado and Wyoming, extending genetic counseling to more than 200 otherwise underserved families a year. The need for Regional Genetic Counseling Programs, their establishment, operation, feasibility, and impact on health case are discussed. The long-term goal of minimizing the frequency of genetic diseases by this approach is attainable.
