Abstract

This article discusses the importance of proper filter preventive maintenance procedures that will prolong filter operation, enhance performance, help your utility meet water effluent goals and regulatory compliance requirements, and save money. The filtration process largely depends on the filter media, and media performance depends primarily on the media's physical condition, backwash effectiveness, and maintaining the correct media depth and retention. Four backwash processes are discussed: water‐only backwash; surface‐wash sweeps; sequential air scour and water; and, simultaneous air scour and water. Proper underdrain system maintenance and thorough recordkeeping are also discussed. Tips for optimizing filter performance are provided.
