Abstract
To the Editor:— Haugen stressed the significance of sudden death due to meat bolus impaction in the hypopharynx and indicated that the unfortunates had false teeth ( JAMA 186 :142 [Oct 12] 1963). Artificial dentures do play a significant role in bolus death, since the hard palate is rendered insensitive by the denture and the swallowed object is under the reflex action of the constrictor muscles before the patient is aware of it. Twenty centuries ago, the Talmud indicated how this catastrophe is to be prevented: One should not converse at meals lest the windpipe acts before the gullet and his life will thereby be endangered.
