Abstract

Context: Calculating weight-based drug dosages for pediatric patients is difficult, with significant error potential. In the pre-hospital setting, few safeguards currently avert pediatric drug administration errors. Objective: To determine whether use of a protocol-specific pediatric code card can enable pre-hospital providers to calculate more consistently accurate weight-based drug dosages, volumes of administration, and age-appropriate endotracheal tube sizes. Design: Questionnaires containing sample calculations of medication dosages, volumes, and endotracheal tube sizes were administered to pre-hospital providers from June to November of 2006.
