Abstract

Objectives
To analyze the use of 400 mg pentoxifylline + 400 mg tocopherol (PENTO) in the prevention of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in patients undergoing extraction after radiotherapy in the head and neck.
Study Design
Seventy-four extractions were performed. Patients used PENTO 3 times a day, starting 15 days before the surgical procedure until the mucosal covering of the operated alveolu. Antibiotic therapy (amoxicillin 500 mg or clindamycin 300 mg for patients with allergy) was performed 48 hours before the procedure, extending up to 10 days after the procedure. The following were evaluated: presence and intensity of pain, presence of infection, bone exposure, use of analgesics, mucosal coverage, and adverse effects of medications every 7 days for 28 days (D7, D14, D21, D28).
Results
Sixty-one percent of patients did not present painful symptoms at D7 and 74% did not use analgesics in the same period. Presence of infection was observed in 2% of participants and total mucosal coverage at D14 in 86% of cases. There was no ORN record.
Conclusions
It is possible to conclude that PENTO can play an important role in the prevention of ORN, in addition to reducing the need for the use of analgesics, ensuring a more comfortable postoperative period.
