Abstract

On the findings obtained by the perfusion of over 2,000 hearts from three racial groups, it is confirmed that at least 75% of normal individuals are born with interarterial coronary anastomosis. The degree and character of such anastomosis vary widely from individual to individual. The pattern may be genetically determined. Attention is drawn to the effects of exercise in lowering the incidence of coronary heart disease, and it is claimed that exercise produces its beneficial effects by enlarging existing interarterial coronary anastomoses, or by bringing again into use the collateral vessels which involuted during childhood. On the experience of the study of the Zulu heart, it is thought that jogging is one of the most practical and effective methods of exercising.
