Abstract

Malaria is caused by infection with 1 or more of 4 Plasmodium species Plasmodium falciparum Plasmodium malariae Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium vivax which are transmitted to humans via the bites of female Anopheles mosquitoes. An estimated 200-500 million cases of malaria occur annually globally resulting in 1.5-2.7 million deaths 75% of which occur in children younger than 5 years of age in sub-Saharan Africa. In the U.S. most malaria cases are imported often by persons who travel to malaria-endemic countries without taking chemoprophylaxis (CP). This review focuses on malaria prevention for children who travel to or reside in malaria-endemic areas. (excerpt)
