Abstract

Oseltamivir drug is one of the most commonly employed antiviral drug and it is used to treat the influenza A and influenza B. However, Oseltamivir drug is not consumed and thrown as a waste product after its expired date. The main reason is the effectiveness of expired Oseltamivir drug declines with time, but retains its potential property after its expiration date. It is true that the effectiveness of a drug may decrease over the time, but much of the original potency still remains even a decade after the expiration date. Surprisingly, expired Oseltamivir drug contains N, O and double bonds, which have not been properly exposed for the several industrial units in order to prevent the aluminum dissolution process. With idea of using waste product and exploring non-toxic corrosion inhibitor, the expired Oseltamivir drug of four different amounts have been prepared and thoroughly screened with the aid of theoretical and experimental tools. This article appraises the corrosion protection property of expired Oseltamivir drug on the aluminum in 3 HCl solution. The corrosion inhibition behavior of expired Oseltamivir drug on aluminum metal in 3 M HCl system was studied by weight loss, atomic absorption spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, AC impedance spectroscopy, quantum chemical, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy techniques. The expired Oseltamivir drug protects the aluminum corrosion from the 3 M HCl solution with contact time and concentration of expired drug dependent mode. The optimum protection efficiency value obtained at 2 mg/L of expired drug. The results show that expired Oseltamivir drug is effective in reduction of corrosion of aluminum. This article provides the novel information on the possible utilization of expired drug as a non-toxic corrosion inhibitor. The probable mechanism of the protection action is also given.
