Abstract

Objective To evaluate the prevention effect of mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord treatment on acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after haplo-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods Eighteen serum sample was collected from patients who received haplo-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at different points after transplants, the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, interferon-γ were detected by ELISA, the incidence of acute GVHD was recorded. Results Four cases of acute GVHD was recorded among in 18 patients, two cases was in degree Ⅱand two cases was in degree Ⅲ-Ⅳ with acute GVHD, the total incidence of acute GVHD was 22.2% and serious GVHD was 11.1%. Compared with patients without acute GVHD, the level of three cytokines in the patients with acute GVHD was increased. Conclusions Mesenchymal stem cells treatment can reduce the incidence and severity of acute GVHD of the patients received haplo-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the mechanism of mesenchymal stem cells treatments may be related to inhibition of cytokines in serum.
