Abstract

At the United Nations Security Council, Germany is committed to deepening our understanding of climate change as a multiplier of threats for peace and security. The priority so far is evidence-based prevention and early warning. This paper discusses this priority and refers to further requirements of an extended concept of security beyond preventive measures. Altogether, Germany makes an important contribution to strengthening the role of science in international politics. However, it is also necessary to discuss which concrete and also coercive instruments the Council can and should use to counter climate security risks.
