Abstract

Purpose: Women’s participation in all football codes is rising globally, including Australian football where the introduction of a national elite women’s competition in 2017 led to a rapid increase in women and girls playing for the first time across all levels. Yet, the benefits of participation for women are often offset by the 2-5 times higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury compared to men. When Australian football is compared to other team sports, the ACL injury risk 3-7 times higher than other female athletes.
