Abstract

Spinal fusion (SF) surgical site infections (SSIs) at our pediatric urban tertiary care teaching hospital (PH) were prevalent for this low volume, high risk surgery. SF SSI is common, well published & costly; often resulting in multiple hospitalizations & surgeries, long term antibiotics, intense suffering, residual symptoms if spinal hardware is removed, sequellae of severe secondary infection, spinal deformity and increased mortality. Our hospitals median SF SSI charges and reimbursement were $467,000 & $27,775 respectively. Various risk factors & prevention recommendations have been identified in the literature however; lack of evidence exists for a combined perioperative & post-operative care bundle.
