Abstract

This chapter seeks to provide all police practitioners with an introduction to preventing cyber crime. The prevention of cyber crime remains the highest priority for all cyber crime investigators. This chapter seeks to guide all police practitioners through the complexities and challenges of effectively providing practical cyber crime prevention advice. Most importantly, this chapter sets out how cyber crime investigators can better protect themselves and their operational activities from all manner of cyber-related threats. There now exists a plethora of free and accessible information designed to keep all online users safe and to provide confidence and reassurance to the public, police partners and private industry; it is absolutely essential that all police officers are able to provide practical cyber crime preventative guidance and advice. It is also important for police officers to be able to readily signpost the public, partners and private businesses to trusted sources of information which will help to keep them safe online, leading to greater online protection and increased awareness of cyber crime prevention methods.
