Abstract

This paper uses function analysis to describe a systematic approach used by 27 Los Angeles-area nightclubs to enhance security efforts. Methods of reducing the probability of altercations include customer selection and training, environmental control, preventing intoxication, and employee training. Finally, the consequences of customer altercations can be minimized by quick response, careful customer handling, and efforts to improve community relations. Preventing customer altercations in nightclubs is difficult due to the degree of customer contact and participation; because club-going patrons have vastly different ego and mood-related reasons for going to a club; and because whenever crowds of people are mixed with the effects of alcohol, altercations seem inevitable.
