Abstract
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) prevalence surveys are important in assessing performance of TB control programs, providing data for planning and assessing trends of the TB over time. Osteoarticular involvement constitute about 10% of extrapulmonary TB cases and spine is the most frequently affected site by TB. Aim of study: find prevalence of pulmonary TB among spinal TB patients in Baghdad Methodology: Longitudinal study conducted in outpatient9s clinics in Baghdad teaching hospital and National TB specialized center. 28 patients diagnosed with spinal TB during June to December/2016 were enrolled in this study. Tuberculin skin test (TST) was done, sociodemographic and clinical data collected. Statistical analysis: Anderson darling test was done to asses continuous variables follow normal distribution. Binary logistic regression analysis used to calculate the odd ratio and their 95% confidence intervals, bootstrapping technique used to account for the distortions caused by the specific sample that may not be fully representative of the population.SPSS v20.0.0, software package used to statistical analysis. P value considered to be significant if less than 0.05 Results: Mean age of this study sample was 45.25 ± 19.02 years. Male to female ratio was 0.87:1. Mean TST was 13.18 ± 4.98 mm. The prevalence of pulmonary TB in spinal TB was 7.14% with 95% confidence interval of 6.19 - 8.10 %.Age, male gender, BMI, smoking history and TST are higher in patients with pulmonary TB compared to those with spinal TB. Only TST was the independent predictor of pulmonary TB in patients with spinal TB Conclusions: The prevalence of pulmonary TB in spinal TB was 7.14%.TST was the independent predictor of pulmonary TB in patients with spinal TB.
