Abstract

It is not currently known how often nursing theory is cited in non-nursing publications. The purpose of this study was to document citations of five nursing theories in non-nursing publications, including author discipline, type of publication, and publication discipline. Leininger, Pender, Parse, and Orem were most often cited in research articles, and Watson was cited more frequently in books. Over 75 non-nursing disciplines cited nursing theories and were consolidated for reporting purposes. Nurse scholars can use these findings to improve interprofessional education and practice and further develop and disseminate nursing knowledge.
