Abstract
RATIONALE: Our previous studies were the first to demonstrate (1) presence of IgE anti-HIV-1 antibodies in HIV-1 infected humans; (2) that IgE has anti-viral function, i.e., suppression of HIV-1 production by IgE mediated cytotoxic activity; and (3) presence and persistence of IgE anti-parvovirus B19 antibodies in infected and IgA deficient patients. Others have described IgE directed against other viruses (RSV, parainfluenza, Puumala, HTLV-1). It could be that an important function of IgE is an anti-viral effect.
