Abstract
The herpesvirus group consists of eight DNA viruses: herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human herpesvirus (HHV) types 6, 7, and 8. They have also been detected in genital secretions, but reported prevalence data vary widely, especially for HSV, with a prevalence range from 3.1% (HSV-2; done by polymerase chain reaction [PCR]) in men with genital HSV-2 infection to 46% (HSV-1 and HSV-2; in situ hybridization) in spermatozoa of infertile men. The presence of HSV and CMV has been found to be associated with altered semen parameters.
