Abstract

Background Falls are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in elderly worldwide. Forty per cent of hospital admissions of elderly people were the result of fall-related injuries. Most often the cause of fall is multi-factorial which potentially preventable ones are. Hence the present study was undertaken to know the risk factors of fall in elderly. Objective To determine the prevalence of fall among elderly and the associated risk factors among them in urban field practice area of BMCRI Bengaluru.Methodology A community based Cross sectional study was conducted for a period of 3 months in urban field practice area of BMCRI Bengaluru.305persons aged more than 60 years were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using pretested semi structured questionnaire and was entered in MS Excel. Analysis was done using SPSS software ver20.0.Results About 32.2 of people gave history of fall in last one year. History of fall was more common in females than males. A significant association was found between falls and the intake of medication vision problems gait abnormalities sedentary life styleamp high Body Mass Index.Conclusion Knowledge of Risk factors of fall in elderly may be useful in developing multidimensional strategies to reduce it and improve the quality of life of elderly population.
