Abstract

Objectives To evaluate the prevalence of desquamative gingivitis (DG) in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) diagnosed at our institution from 2000 to 2019. Study Design A retrospective evaluation of the medical records of patients diagnosed with OLP was performed. Patients who presented histopathologic diagnosis of OLP and DG lesions at the time of diagnosis were included. Results Fourteen cases presented DG at the time of diagnosis (23.3%); all were women and were diagnosed with erosive OLP. The age ranged from 17 to 63 years, with a mean of 46 years old. On intraoral examination, 7 patients presented lesions both in marginal and/or inserted gingiva in the anterior and posterior regions (50.0%). Triamcinolone acetonide mouthrinse was the drug of choice for the treatment of OLP; the concentrations were 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% and it was prescribed for all patients (100.0%). Four patients presented skin lesions (28.6%). Conclusions DG was seen in 23.3% of affected patients; all were women with erosive OLP. The condition affected anterior and/or posterior regions of the gingiva.
