Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and celiac disease (CD) are both autoimmune disorders. The association between CD and diabetes mellitus has been known for many decades. [ [1] Koletzko S. Burgin-Wolff A. Koletzko B. Knapp M. Burger W. Gruneklee D. Prevalence of celiac disease in diabetic children and adolescents. A multicentre study. Eur. J. Pediatr. 1988; 148: 113-117 Crossref PubMed Scopus (87) Google Scholar ]. When patients with T1DM were screened for CD, 6.0 to 10.0% were found antibody positive and/or biopsy positive [ 2 Gillett P.M. Gillett H.R. Israel D.M. Metzger D.L. Stewart L. Chanoine J.P. et al. High prevalence of celiac disease in patients with type 1 diabetes detected by antibodies to endomysium and tissue transglutaminase. Can. J. Gastroenterol. 2001; 15: 297-301 PubMed Google Scholar , 3 Arato A. Korner A. Veres G. Dezsofi A. Ujpal I. Madacsy L. Frequency of celiac disease in Hungarian children with diabetes mellitus. Eur. J. Pediatr. 2003; 162: 1-5 Crossref PubMed Scopus (36) Google Scholar ]. For establishing the diagnosis of CD small intestinal biopsy is mandatory, but the diagnosis of CD is complicated due to the fact that the disease may be silent or present with atypical findings. To determine the exact incidence of CD, we need to identify the most economical, practically feasible, sensitive and specific serological screening test. Excellent diagnostic screening tests are now available including those that detect anti-gliadin, anti-endomysial and anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies.
