Abstract

Ber black fruit spot (Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler) is the most serious disease limiting the quality fruit production. The disease produces round, slightly depressed, black spots with clear margin on fruit surface. During surveillance, the disease was present in Ludhiana, Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib and Patiala districts of Punjab with incidence varied from 4.7 to 22.8 per cent. The disease index was highest in Fazilka and lowest in Patiala. Among cultivated varieties, Sanuar-2 showed maximum (20.7%) while Kaithali showed minimum (4.7%) disease incidence. Out of twenty one ber cultivars, Sanuar-2 was susceptible whereas Thornless, Sanuar-4, Pathani, Safeda, Selected Safeda, Seo and Nalagarh were resistant to the disease. In vitro, azoxystrobin and mancozeb were effective in inhibiting the growth of pathogen with ED50 value of 0.8 ppm and 74 ppm, respectively. Two sprays of azoxystrobin (0.1%) and mancozeb (0.25%) in mid-January and mid-February were better in controlling the disease.
