Abstract

Summary Asymbiotic N2-fixing bacteria — Azospirillum — were detected within the stem nodules, root nodules and stems of Aeschynomene indica, A. aspera, surface sterilized with chloramine T. All the isolates of Azospirillum from Aeschynomene and Neptunia exhibited nitrogenase activities (acetylene reduction) in N-free semi-solid Dobereiner’s medium. Higher nitrogenase activity was determined with the Azospirillum isolated from the stems.
