Abstract

SESSION TITLE: Allergy and Airway Posters SESSION TYPE: Original Investigation Posters PRESENTED ON: October 18-21, 2020 PURPOSE: Limited data exist on the prevalence of asthma in Europe in recent years. This study estimated the prevalence of diagnosed asthma, the proportion of patients with diagnosed asthma receiving treatment, and the severity distribution of asthma in five European countries in 2018. METHODS: Data from the population-based, cross-sectional, online, patient-reported National Health and Wellness Survey (NHWS) among adults (≥18 years of age) conducted in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom (UK) were used in this study. The NHWS sample is representative of the adult population of the five European countries and is drawn from an internet panel stratified by age and gender in each country. In this survey, the case definition of asthma included survey respondents who reported experiencing asthma symptoms in the past 12 months and who confirmed receiving a physician diagnosis of asthma. Respondents with asthma were asked whether they were receiving any prescription treatments for asthma at the time of the survey and were also asked to rate the severity of their asthma (mild, moderate, or severe). RESULTS: From the total survey sample (total N=62,000; France/Germany/UK, n=15,000 each; Italy, n=10,000; and Spain, n=7000), the weighted prevalence of diagnosed asthma was 6.2% (France 5.3%; Germany 5.9%; UK 9.5%; Italy 4.6%; Spain 5.5%). Among patients diagnosed with asthma, 74.1% received prescription treatment for asthma (France 67.4%; Germany 72.0%; UK 83.7%; Italy 67.2%; Spain 72.4%). Overall, 51.0% of these respondents rated their asthma severity as mild, 28.9% as moderate, and 20.1% as severe. CONCLUSIONS: These recent estimates suggest that in 2018 the UK had the highest prevalence of asthma among the largest five Western European countries. In addition, approximately half of the patients diagnosed with asthma rated their disease as moderate or severe, suggesting a high patient-reported disease severity among patients with asthma. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Recent estimates from the NHWS study suggest a high prevalence of asthma among the largest five Western European countries, with approximately half of the patients diagnosed with asthma rating their disease as moderate or severe.
