Abstract

Objective To examine prevalence characteristics and pathogenic spectrum of fever with respiratory syndrome in Liaoning province and to provide a basis for clinical diagnosis and prevention and control of the syndrome. Methods Medical records and throat swab specimens of fever and respiratory syndrome cases were collected at 10 sentinel hospitals in 8 cities of Liaoning province from 2012 through 2014.Influenza virus (Flu),parainfluenza virus (PIA),respiratory adenovirus (Adv),respiratory syncytial virus (RSV),human coronavirus (HCov),human rhinovirus (HRV),and human metapneumovirus (hMMV) were detected with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Results Of the 670 specimens detected,132 were positive for the viruses, with a overall positive rate of 19.70%;of the positive specimens,39.26%were positive for Flu,14.81%for HRV,15.56%for RSV,14.81%for Adv,9.63%for PIV,5.19% for HCov,and 0.74%for hMMV,respectively.More than 40%of the fever cases with respiratory syndrome were small children under 10 years old and more cases occurred during the period from November of a year to March of the next year. Conclusion Fever with respiratory syndrome was prevalent mainly in children under 10 years old and during winter to spring season in Liaoning province and main pathogen in relation to the epidemic was influenza virus and human meta pneumovirus was rarely prevalent.
