Abstract

ABSTRACT. The prevalence of type II diabetes in Denmark increases with age to a maximum about the age of 70 years and the increase is higher for known diabetics than for previously undiagnosed diabetics. In the age group 60–74 years the total prevalence of diabetes was 6.1 % (5.5 % for women and 6.6 % for men). The results of glucagon tests seem to indicate that about 60 % of insulin treated subjects after the age of 60 years are of type II. All diet treated diabetics and nearly all tablet treated and newly diagnosed diabetics are of type II. The incidence of type II diabetes in Denmark has not been well described and might only be determined by reexamining the same fixed population with short intervals. Differences in ascertainment, methods, and diagnostic criteria, from one study to another make a close comparison of different studies impossible. Key words: prevalence, incidence, epidemiology, maturity onset diabetes.
