Abstract

Previous studies on the prevalence or incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Canada are based on survey data or administrative hospital databases. In both cases, certain methodological limitations exist. In this study, we develop a new methodology for measuring incidence and prevalence. Specifically, incidence and prevalence are estimated using all existing data, rather than with 'washout periods' as is done in previous studies. Our results suggest that, among the three provinces studied, New Brunswick has the highest estimated incidence and prevalence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and of stroke. Estimated incidence and prevalence rates of AMI are higher for men than for women, while estimated incidence and prevalence of stroke are about the same for both sexes.
