Abstract

Background: Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that has been associated with poor reproductive health outcomes in women. The prevalence of M.genitalium is unknown as screening of asymptomatic individuals is not recommended, and until 2019 the available tests lacked sensitivity. We aimed to use the Aptima/Hologic transcription mediated amplification assay (MG-TMA), with a sensitivity and specificity of 80% or higher for urine and endocervical samples, to diagnose M.genitalium infection in a clinical sample of sexually active adolescent females and to describe associated symptoms and risk factors.
