Abstract

Aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence and characteristics of metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with bronchial asthma (BA). Methods: This study was conducted from 3 October 2015 until 12 November 2016. 142 patients with BA (mean age 54.6±11.8, m=55%) and 81 patients without BA (control group; mean age 52.5±12.6, m=49%) were enrolled in this study. Anthropometric measurements, spirometry, body composition, functional exercise performance, and mood and health status, laboratory data were assessed. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the “Harmonized definition of the MS”. BA was diagnosed according to GINA, 2011. Results: The presence of MS was 39.4% of the BA patients and 29.6% in patients without BA (p Conclusion: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome is high in patients with BA. It shows the importance the development of comprehensive strategies aimed at prevention and treatment of co-morbidities. Correction of the above mentioned risk factors of MS may have a significant role in prevention of complications and in improvement of quality of life in patients with BA.
