Abstract

The article shows that from 1859 a fully fledged modern antisemitism was politically utilized by the left wing of the conservative party against the liberals in Prussia. In accordance with the new cultural history studies on antisemitism, it suggests that the emergence of modern antisemitism should be dated prior to the "Gründerkrise" after 1873 as it has become known since the late 1960s, according to ans Rosenberg. In contrast to those studies though it suggests to revive historical research on antisemitism from the perspective of political and social history ; it argues that the rise of modern antisemitism - as an ideology as well as a political strategy - should be examined not only in relation to the Great Depression between 1873 and 1896, but more closely connected to the transformation crisis of civil society in the first half of the nineteenth century : In relation to developments in economy, social structure rifts and the emancipation of Jewish people as well as the bourgeoisie itself.
