Abstract

A fresh concept of using cavity-saturated racetracks to improve the bearing fatigue life is being explored in this work. Three different types of sand-blasted steel races, with 120-mesh and 220-mesh Al 2 O 3 powders and an ultrafine Si 3 N 4 powder as the blasting medium, respectively, have been tested in both “all-metal” and “hybrid” bearings. Preliminary results of the fatigue life and SEM/AES analyses reveal some preferable tribological traits for the Si 3 N 4 sand-blasted 52100 steel race.
