Abstract

Abstract Nowadays, lignocellulosic materials have gained increased interest in research and special importance because of their reproducible and abundant nature. A large amount of lignocellulosic biomass can potentially be converted into different high value products including value added fine chemicals, bio-fuels, and cheap energy sources, enzyme production and microbial fermentation. It is chiefly composed of cellulose, a linear glucose polymer, hemicellulose, highly branched heteropolymer, and lignin, a very high molecular weight and cross-linked aromatic macromolecule. Composition of lignocellulosic biomass makes them unsusceptible to enzyme attack. Therefore, a pretreatment step is essential to increase the reactivity of cellulose by disruption of its close association with hemicellulose and lignin. Present review article focused on pretreatment methods that can be used for the pretreatment of different lignocellulosic materials.
