Abstract

The production of biofuels and bio-based products from lignocellulosic biomass is promising because biomass is a sustainable source of mixed sugars. Ionic liquid (IL) with different anions has been used for biomass pretreatment. Although it was reported that over 90% of cellulose in corn stover was converted to glucose with high temperature IL pretreatment, xylan was degraded. In this study, corn stover was pretreated at mild conditions to preserve polysaccharides in solid fraction. The pretreatment conditions were optimized for maximizing the total yield of monosaccharides including glucose and xylose. A maximum total sugar yield of 88.0%, with glucose yield of 93.9% and xylose yield of 75.9% based on untreated biomass, was obtained at 110 C for 3 h pretreatment without complete dissolution of biomass. Compositional changes were investigated, and structural changes during IL pretreatment were studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The study provides information of the effects of IL pretreatment on biomass structure and on the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis.
