Abstract

ASTM F3043 twist-off type tension control bolt assemblies have a nominal strength of 200 ksi, representing a 33% increase in strength over ASTM F3125 Grade A490 bolts. Grade 2 of the ASTM F3043 bolt, manufactured in Japan, has been used in Japan since its first commercial application in 2001. The installation procedures for twist-off type tension control bolts used in the U.S. are based on the Research Council for Structural Connections (RCSC) Specification, which differs from those procedures used in Japan. Testing of 210 pretensioned assemblies was performed to verify that the RCSC procedures produce the specified minimum pretensions in F3043 Grade 2 bolt assemblies, under a variety of conditions: varying size and length, exposure to wetting, corrosion, relubrication, high and low temperatures, different hole sizes, and sloped surfaces. Tension tests were also conducted to compare the tension behavior of ASTM F3043 Grade 2 bolts to A325 and A490 bolts. Pretension tests were conducted using four unique bolt lengths for each of the available bolt diameters: 1 in., 1–1/8 in., and 1–1/4 in. Cumulative probability density functions were created for each group of pretension force results and normal distributions were fit to the data. For the 42 specimens tested at 70 °F with standard size holes and as-received lubrication, all bolt assemblies achieved a pretension force greater than the minimum specified with an average pretension 13% greater than the minimum required.
