Abstract

Metal-like glistening artifacts were seen on 68 out of 100 intraocular lenses. They were believed to be remnants of polishing compound. Cataract removal had been by phacoemulsification, extracapsular or intracapsular techniques. Similar appearing artifacts were depicted on manufacturer-supplied intraocular lenses that were examined and photographed in vitro. When they were examined by scanning electron microscopy, the artifacts were found to be microcontaminants composed largely of organic material. They were not polishing compound.
