Abstract

Results of a comprehensive study on the optimization of some 240 beams of reinforced, prestressed and partially prestressed concrete using nonlinear programming techniques are presented. Evaluation of these results provides some tentative answers to the desirability of partial prestressing, its extent, its economic feasibility vis-a-vis reinforced or fully prestressed concrete and the possible benefits of a unified design approach between reinforced, prestressed, and partially prestressed concrete.
