Abstract

In a world increasingly attentive to the educational needs of preschool children, the French dcole maternelle occupies a position of special eminence. Included within the national system of education in 1881, during the 'heroic period' which established free, compulsory and secular elementary schools, the maternelle has benefited both from being separate from the dcole primaire, with its own inspectrices, directrices and (effectively) institutrices, and at the same time integrated within the planning and finance of education as a whole [1]. Furthermore although Belgium actually caters more completely for the age range three to six, the French service is more comprehensive in its acceptance of two-year-olds [2].
