Abstract
In the future, in-situ soil testing devices, such as the pressuremeter, will play an increasingly important role in the art of foundation engineering. The Menard pressuremeter and its application to a wide variety of foundation problems has already been the subject of a text-book (Baguelin, Jezequel and Shields). Compared to the Menard pressuremeter the self-boring pressuremeter (SBP) is very much in its infancy. In this paper both types of pressuremeter are briefly discussed and compared.
