Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper presents pressure surge analysis of ash slurry pipelines of two thermal power stations. The pressure surges in ash slurry pipeline are caused by gradual surges or abrupt shocks. The flow of fly ash-water mixture is a two component flow. In the present study the mixture is considered homogeneous and particles of ash are assumed to be distributed homogeneously. The two-components are treated as single pseudo-fluid with average properties and reasons for considering it as a homogeneous flow is enumerated. The Method of Characteristics is used to solve the non- linear partial differential equations of transient flows by first order finite difference scheme. The study addresses the optimal closing and opening sequence of pump discharge valve and the necessary surge protective devices. The study indicated that sub-atmospheric pressures exist at several locations along the pipeline fop both the case studies, during power failure to pumps. Provision of air valves at critical locations restricted the transient pressures to their designed values. Recent trends of providing internal lining for slurry pipelines to avoid wear and abrasion are also discussed.
