Abstract

Summary Pressure sores are costly to treat. They also cause great pain and suffering to patients. Devices to prevent and treat sores work either by redistributing or by alternately increasing and decreasing pressure under the body. A good understanding of the mechanics of pressure distribution can help to reduce skin tissue damage by the choice of appropriate support surface for patients confined to bed. The old adage that `prevention is better than cure' is perhaps nowhere more appropriate than in the management of pressure sores. They should not be a major problem where a hospital has developed an active plan for their prevention.
