Abstract

INTRODUCTION Pressure sores are not a sudden creation of modem medicine. They were found in Egyptian Mummies and early on in the seventeenth Century, John Hunter discovered that they were associated with uneven distribution ofbody weight• Ina 'modem' hospital they continue to occur with alarming frequency and Livesley2 has described pressure sores as the 'Silent Epidemic' often accepted as a normal consequence of illness and hospitalisation. This silence is compounded by two pervading myths, the first being that pressure sores are a nursing problem with the implication that pressure sores are the result of poor nursing practice 3• This is untrue as it is know now known that the causation is multifactorial. The second myth is that pressure sores areparticulartotheelderlypopulationandconsequentlyknowledge of this condition is important only to those working within departments caring for the elderly.
